Down Syndrome
Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are small “packages” of genes in the body. They determine how a baby’s body forms and functions as it grows during pregnancy and after birth. Typically, a baby is born with 46 chromosomes
If you are a girl. You are 35 years old. You can't get married yet. Or you just couldn't become a mother for some reason. So this article is very useful for you.
Do you know That at the age of 35 and in modern researches at the age of 33 if a girl becomes a mother. So there are high chances that her baby will have Down syndrome.
How Many Chances There are According to the Age of the Girl
Mother's age 20-24 years 1/5000
Mother's age 25-32 years 1/1200
Mother age 33-35 years 1/350
Maternal age 40-36 years 1/100
Mother age 45-41 years 1/30
Along with this, at any age of the mother, if the age of the father is more than 40, then the risk of having Down syndrome also doubles. If both husband and wife are around 40 years of age, there is also concern. Apart from this, having a previous history in the family can also be a reason. This can happen with chromosomal abnormality even if the parents are under 30 and there is no history. No single reason can be applied to the entire population. But keeping these things in mind, possible caution is necessary.
A child in the form of a child in the picture under consideration is 100% seen by your physical eye in your street, neighborhood, village. Why haven't you seen it? Their ratio is 1 in every 700 births. Assume the total population of Pakistan is 21 crores. So according to this calculation, there are about 30 thousand Down syndrome in Pakistan. Their appearance is similar to Mongols, so they are also called Mongolian children.
I call them golo-molo. I love these kids so much. Apart from school children, any child should be found somewhere on the way or during the journey. I would try to take a puppy from him or pinch him lovingly on the cheek, pick him up and hug him if possible. And if the parents don't know, let them know about his education.
What is Down Syndrome?
As soon as sperm and egg unite in the womb of a human mother or through IVF. So a single celled organism comes into being. A sperm from the father that meets an egg contains 23 tiny things or codes of information. The same 23 codes of information are also contained in the ovum released from the mother's ovary. These 23 tiny things are called chromosomes. Chromosomes from both sides join together to form 23 pairs. It is normal for a zygote to have 46 chromosomes. But in Down's syndrome, chromosome number 21 is matched with its partner number 21 from the opposite side. So due to genetic mutation (diversity) it becomes 3 chromosomes instead of 2. It is also called trisomy or T21.
Now the first single cell of life has 47 chromosomes instead of 46. This cell is a stem cell or primary cell. Which further divides to form other cells. 47 of these chromosomes continue to be formed in each cell. And the resulting baby is born with a slightly different physical shape and structure. Which you can see in the picture attached to the post.
What is the Identity of These Children?
Flat nose which in Punjabi is called Pheni Naak.
The ears are small but erect.
Eyes bulging and thin but rising from the outer edges.
The neck is short and quite thick.
The head is usually larger than normal children.
Smiling face.
Usually, these children are shorter than normal and obese.
How much Mental Capacity? What are the other Problems?
Talking about intellectual ability or retardation, their IQ can be 50-70 in majority and 35-50 in some children. Which is average i.e. at least 70 and usually less than 120 if higher. These children have problems with reasoning/thinking, logic, cognitive deficits. Speech problems, fast or slow heart beat, heart perforation, narrowing of valves etc. are common problems with it.
Consider that 50 percent of people with Down syndrome have heart problems. But only 10 to 15 percent of them require the help of a cardiologist for treatment.
In addition, they have problems with insomnia, Alzheimer's, dementia, thyroid and skin aging. Their teeth are also very small. Some children have trouble chewing hard objects.
How is the diagnosis made?
Down syndrome is diagnosed in an ultrasound scan performed by a specialist radiologist between the fifteenth and twentieth week of pregnancy. If earlier identification is desired, Down syndrome can be detected by Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) test as early as 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. In this, an ultrasonic needle is inserted into the mother's abdomen. And blood cells are sampled from the placenta, the food and oxygen conduit. It is painless and usually a 20 minute job. It also does not harm pregnancy.
If more time has passed, another test, Amniocentesis, is done at 15 to 18 weeks of pregnancy. In this too, an ultrasonic needle is inserted into the uterus. A drop of water is removed from the liquid in the membrane around the baby called amniotic fluid. It also takes 20 minutes without any pain. Nothing happens to pregnancy either. Just get this test done by a qualified gynecologist.
You can also terminate the pregnancy according to the teachings of your religion and sect after a confirmed diagnosis of Down syndrome. Or continue to give birth to a Down syndrome child. According to my knowledge and studies, Muslim Muslims, there is some scope for terminating the pregnancy by consulting the doctors and taking the opinion of the scholars before the soul is breathed into the lump of flesh. According to Quranic and hadith teachings, the age of soul blowing is 4 months i.e. 16 weeks after conception. First test CVS should be diagnosed between eleventh and fourteenth week. And if you want to terminate the pregnancy, you can decide based on your religion and beliefs and get a fatwa.
Worldwide, 30 to 40 percent of pregnancies diagnosed with Down syndrome are terminated. It includes all religions and non-religious people.
The average age of these children is 50 to 60 years.
Their International Day is March 21.
A child was born. Or it was known that Down's syndrome was created willingly and happily. What to do now?
The first thing to do is Celebrate the birth of this child in the same way, share sweets, do Aqeeqah as you do on the birth of normal children. Don't cry at all, otherwise something will happen. You cannot change the 47 chromosomes in every single cell out of the billions and trillions of cells in a child's body to 46 even with all the power in the world. That is, the physical structure and mental capacity of the child will remain the same throughout the life. You can do it much better by paying attention from day one.
There is no cure for it. Accept this truth. People believe this truth after many years. The treatment continues. By then the whole raft of the child would have sunk.
The first 1000 days of these babies' lives are very important.
Get a hearing and vision test soon after birth. Get the heart rate checked immediately. Keep a regular record of it. See a cardiologist at the first six months of age and get a diagnosis of possible heart disease. If you have a hearing problem, get a good quality hearing aid fitted by a certified professional at the age of one month. The child listens to the mother's voice and responds. The child who listens will speak. Otherwise, it will be too late.
It is a developmental disability. My Master is in ID field. And it was my favorite disability.
Early intervention should be started as early as possible. That will be the benefit. If early intervention is not given, these children do not speak or walk properly by the age of three. If intervention is given, they will start reading and writing by the age of three, Masha Allah.
What to do in early intervention?
By all means, get a hearing aid if needed before one year of age.
Teach to use all five senses from the age of one year. Get help from a professional therapist.
Muscles and bones and joints of these children are weak. Consult a physiotherapist and start physiotherapy as soon as possible. And continue as needed for a few years. Later, add regular walks, exercise or going to the gym or playing a game in his routine. Otherwise the child will become very fat. Or will become very weak.
Give the diet as advised by the doctor. Each child's problems may be different. Digestive system is also affected in many children.
In school, their social skills, self-help skills i.e. doing their own things like dressing, putting on shoe belts, tying straps, brushing, buttoning, etc. are taught first.
Along with this, work is done on improving the child's motor skills, language skills and cognitive processing.
These children can study with normal children in special education or general mainstream education with early intervention. Some children are educable and some are trainable. If these children work hard, they can study up to masters. By giving early intervention in the first three to four years, they can be taught in a normal school.
Due to lack of awareness, lack of institutions or lack of information in Pakistan, the first years of these children's lives are lost. So that loss can never be recovered. As a result, these children would be wandering in the streets. People make fun of them, tease them, abuse them or follow them. This is how their age would pass.
Facilities for Down Syndrome in Pakistan
Accept the child wholeheartedly from day one. Follow what I have written above and inshallah the child will lead a life as close to normal as possible. The education and training of these children has been arranged in the government special education center in every district, every tehsil, every town of Punjab. But it has been seen that these children are treated unfairly by their parents considering them as children of Haram. Say the Lord's name. Parents are bringing these children at the age of 6 to 8 years. And then understand that now these children are the responsibility of the school children. We are free. They used to spend money on the rest of the children and give them attention, but they didn't care. Never come back to school after admission. And often teachers also stop paying attention. And on the other hand, if the parents were paying attention from the heart, then the teacher would be incompetent or the hood would be forbidden. Either he doesn't pay attention or if he had too many children, he would ruin the child's life.
An entire team plays a role in enabling these children. In which psychologists, speech therapists, music teachers, class teachers are present in every school. If you are not satisfied with the performance of the government special school. They are aware that nothing is being done to the child. His IEP (Individualized Education Plan) has not been created or given to you. You don't know what the school is doing, so go to school. Ask respectfully what is being done. What should we do with the child at home? Meet the school principal and discuss your case. And pay attention to the education and training of the child together with the school staff.
Best Professions for Down Syndrome
These children can do very well in Photography, Stage Performances, Dancer, Modelling, Wrestling etc., Paralympics games. Can be successfully employed under supervision in any office general super store. You can also get jobs in government departments according to your education and qualifications.
Well, one last thing. If Down syndrome girls get married, they have a 50% chance of becoming mothers. And there is a 50% chance that their child will also have Down syndrome.
Down syndrome men. I have very low fatherhood..you can guess that. That only three Down syndrome men have become fathers in known cases worldwide so far. There have been thousands of marriages.
Marry the girl, if possible, to another person with a minor disability or to a normal person if someone accepts. Try not to give birth to a girl child. Just go to your in-laws. Where children are not needed.
I will tell the parents. Do not delay marriages of girls unnecessarily. Shoot the dowry it will continue to make later. And maybe it is not the turn to give, but the people will get along well. It is the only disability that has a direct correlation with maternal age. Many other mental and physical disabilities are more likely to occur during pregnancy after the age of the mother is 33 to 35 years. If you plan to become a mother at the age of 33, you must undergo genetic counseling. From where to get it done and what to do, I will write in detail soon.
