''Microcephaly is a condition where a baby's head is much smaller than expected. During pregnancy, a baby's head grows because the baby's brain grows. Microcephaly can occur because a baby's brain has not developed properly during pregnancy or has stopped growing after birth, which results in a smaller head size''.
Concept of Microcephaly in Pakistan
''Micro'' means small and ''cephaly'' means head, so the term came to mean small head. It is a neurological condition in which the baby's head either in the womb or after birth is very large or slightly smaller than average. But in Punjab, these children were called and believed to be "Shah Dula Peer Ke Chohe" since the period of Ignorance.
They were dressed in green clothes and begged for alms by making them court mills. This practice is still prevalent today. People may think of him as ''Wali Allah'' and not giving him alms is like putting himself in trouble by showing his heart. They also pray to them. Their prayer has the same effect as the prayer of any other person. Please clear yourself from this misconception.
All this is ignorance. He has no connection with any Shah Dole Peer. These children are born all over the world. Here are some of the reasons.
1. The lack of access to a balanced diet by pregnant mothers has a profound effect on the growth of children. Where other problems arise, microcephaly is also mostly caused by maternal malnutrition.
2. Genetic or chromosomal reasons may also be behind it. such as Down syndrome. Down syndrome children also have small heads.
3. Infections of the pregnant girl during pregnancy such as Zika virus, rubella, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, chickenpox etc.
4. Lack of oxygen to the baby's head during pregnancy is one of the main reasons for this. That's why I say to always get your regular scan done by a specialist radiologist. Gynecologists are not radiologists. They are separate doctors who only do x-rays and ultrasounds.
5. A pregnant girl having phenylketonuria (PKU). I will write a detailed article on this PKU some day.
6. Premature fusion of the bones of the baby's head, which we call craniosynostosis. You see, when a baby is born, the bones of its head are still separate. Which are connected later. In microcephaly, they become attached quickly. And the head stops growing.
Apart from this, some environmental factors also cause microcephaly. A pregnant girl taking too many medicines, taking alcohol or drugs can also cause this.
What are the Problems with Microcephaly?
The fifth area of development is speaking, walking, thinking, understanding, self-care, and socialization. Physical growth will also be less than average. These children usually appear to you to be generally thin to short in stature. Short stature along with head is called Dwarfism.
There may be learning disabilities or difficulties.
Problems with balance in walking and walking are more severe at an early age.
Babies cry a lot. Some children also have dysphagia. That is, they suffer from difficulty in swallowing something. Hearing loss can be partial or complete. Vision may be impaired. and hyperactivity may occur. That is, they will not sit in one place. Their lives will not rest.
In some cases where the symptoms are severe. These children die within a few days or months. Each microcephaly is different in its causes and structure.
Some people with microcephaly live completely normal lives. Their IQ and everything else is normal. Just the head is small.
And the majority of these children can have a normal life. They should be given education and training just out of mercy and compassion.
What Should to do After Birth?
Measure the baby's head every month after birth. Use an inch tape at home and measure the circumference of the head from the forehead to the back in centimeters. And prepare a chart on which to continue this practice for 36 months. Keep writing the weight and height along with it. See a child specialist if there are any red flags such as head growth or weight gain.
What is the Treatment?
There is no cure worldwide. Yes, by working hard on these children for years, we can raise and improve their quality of life. Can educate them. Can teach them any skill. Can give them some training. And they can easily live their life financially independent. Can get married and have children. Two microcephaly children passed out from our institution, Bilal and Ahmed Alhamdulillah, are leading successful lives. A person can earn up to Rs. 1,000 per day by setting up a gram stall in his own street. And the other guy is a waiter at a fast food outlet. Who is earning 20 thousand per month with salary including tip.
Precautionary Measures !!
If one child is born with microcephaly, at least consult a gynecologist before having another child. Otherwise, there is a 25% chance that the second child will also have the same problem. Doctors guide by determining the causes of the first child and how to prevent the next child, but only highly qualified and experienced doctors can guide in these cases.
Please free the begging microcephaly from these haram-eating professional beggars. They hire them and beg from them. You would pity them and give them ten and twenty, and so generation after generation the scourge of begging would seem to be associated with microcephaly.
